A Brief History of Shoe

Shoe was created by three-time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, Jeff MacNelly in 1977. In 1978 and 1979 Shoe and Jeff were awarded the National Cartoonists Society's highest honor, the Reuben. Shoe is published in 500 newspapers world-wide by King Features Syndicate.

Jeff died of cancer in 2000. The strip is carried on by his widow, Susie MacNelly and his long-time assistant, Chris Cassatt. Gary Brookins handles the magic brush.

Shoe takes place in the mythical town of Treetops, East Virginia where Shoe (P. Martin Shoemaker) and Perfesser Cosmo Fishhawk publish a newspaper called The Treetops Tattler.

They hang out at Roz's Roost, the local greasy spoon run by Roz Speckelhen (based on Susie MacNelly).

Other members of the cast include Skyler, Cosmo's nephew, Irv (Irving Seagull) who runs a junkyard, fix-it shop and garage, Loon, who acts as a general go-for, guitar player, skywriter, etc.

Senator Batson D. Belfry eternally runs for president, Madame Zoo Doo, is the strip's fortuneteller, the Wiz keeps all the tech running and Biz is the geezer.
